A huge THANK YOU! to those of you who have opened your hearts and your homes to one of our rescue dogs!

FOXY & RUBY:  The "ULTIMATE LIVESTOCK GUARDIANS"!!!

Yes, there is a breeder out here in the Pacific Northwest who is actually advertising these dogs as such! His (her?) idea of good breeding practice is to allow dogs of several breeds (allegedly Maremma, Great Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepherds) to free breed as they take care of "1000s of acres of sheep".  Unfortunately we can't locate any breed aficionado who's ever seen this particular coloring crop up among the above mentioned breeds, so we're wondering if perchance a stray Australian Shepherd showed up one day :-)

These girls are now over two years old and landed in rescue originally because their owners had no dog-proof fencing, so they spent quite a bit of time going walkabout.  They had been around chickens, mules, horses, goats, cats and people, as well as other dogs and did very well all around. Apparently they were also very effective at driving off coyotes.  And they've taken a long road trip to the midwest where they will have the chance to cavort on a farm.

First MAX, then TEDDY, now ZAKAT

Teddy was found tied up to a fence near a veterinary clinic in Manhattan. He was originally turned in to a local shelter and scheduled for euthanasia.  Thanks to the efforts of Joann Dimon, who is with the Akita Rescue of Western New York and other volunteers, Teddy was transported to Yelena Levitina at Caucasian Legend Kennels in New Hampshire. She traced his microchip to a breeding kennel in the Georgian Republic.

Yelena says he seemed to be well cared for, loved & groomed before ending up tied to that fence.  She has attempted to find the owner, who apparently brought him to the US about a year ago, but has had no luck.

He's about 1 1/2 years old, and loved playing with some of Yelena's dogs while she was fostering him.  She found him a new home and there he will have the opportunity to meet quite a few new animals, as he is on a working farm.

DART

Dart was one of two Caucasian puppies imported from Poland in 2006.  These two ended up in a home with 36 APBT and the moron who fought them.  When he was arrested, Dart was found on a three foot tie in the basement of the house, sitting in his own excrement and all by himself.  We still don't know and perhaps never will, why this man wanted Caucasians.  The female is still missing and allegedly died of heat stroke.  None of us are going to believe a word out of the mouths of either the fighter or anyone who assisted with the importation.

Dart has found a home with two of the detectives on the case, appears to have settled in and is enjoying a relatively normal life now.  This photo was taken at his  first birthday party :-)

JASMINE

Jasmine is an absolutely adorable young Tibetan Mastiff who appeared to have been neglected by her original owner.  Her whole desire in life was to play and she was great with every dog we had out to play with her, even when we had five or six dogs all out romping together.

Her second greatest joy is cuddling with someone, especially if that someone has treats in hand :-)

She's still not 100% regarding housebreaking, but we've noticed that frequent walks or exercise have pretty much solved that problem.  Duh.............:-)

She looked like she was just over a year old and she absolutely loved attention. She's in a home where she's receiving a great deal of that.

KODY

Kody is a rather exotic color for a Tibetan Mastiff and was a bit smaller than I expected, but he really wanted to have a home of his own.  He thoroughly enjoyed hopping in the water on a hot day and then cuddling up to the nearest human :-)  Hey, it's a fun way to cool off!

He did learn to be not quite so defensive with other dogs, but we had a heck of a time trying to teach him not to bite other dogs on the rear. There were a couple of moments while he was here where I thought Alma might just eat him in retaliation. :-)

He played with JR, Kayla, Jasmine, AlmaBear and Boby and did very well once he learned some manners. Kayla did find it necessary to teach him how to play, Alma had to correct his silliness and Boby would sit on him when he got too rowdy with Jasmine. :-)

ZOEY

Zoey is another of the numerous South Russian Ovcharkas showing up in Texas.  With the exception of Henry and Ella, all of them appear to be approximately the same age.

Zoey is working with her new owner, who is a police officer and he's trying her out as a cadaver dog.  She resides with him and his rescue Fila Brasiliero, who works as a search and rescue dog as well as his K9 companion.

BARAK

We think this one is a brother to Zoey and Dolly and he had to be shaved because of the terrible condition of his coat. He is in a rather more traditional home than Zoey and is doing very well.

ELLA

Ella is the fourth South Russian Ovcharka to have turned up in Texas shelters in the past two months.

She is between 2 and 2 1/2 years old and seems to get along well with other dogs, once she has the chance to get to know them.  She will be very protective of her new owner and absolutely must go to an experienced home with someone who can "read" her.

Since 4 of these dogs have appeared in shelters we think it's pretty safe to assume that they're a *little* too much for the average person who was expecting a fluffy white dog.:-)

One of our fellow rescuers has fallen in love with Ella and she's in her forever home!

AJAX

Ajax came from a somewhat less than ideal situation, but is starting to nicely adjust to all the changes in his life.  He is approximately 3 years old.  After shying away from all of us for a time, he discovered that treats could be easily had if he just stood still.  So, he's perfected that to the point where I have to turn around slowly for fear of tripping over him :-)

He is a big sweetheart of a boy who is justifiably wary of meeting new people, but has actually reached the point (and relatively quickly) where he is even allowing us to comb that undercoat out of him now.

He does enjoy being with other dogs, and has been adopted by a super family with a 5 year old Bernese Mountain Dog, who seems to feel that Ajax could just be fun to have around!

JR

JR is another of the Tibetan Mastiffs we've had the pleasure of fostering here. He, like Kody, arrived here with almost no idea of how to play.....I wish I could understand how this happens!

Kayla VERY patiently taught both boys to play bow, then to run and chase and finally to leave her alone and go play together.  The first time they did this, she stood by watching with a very approving look on her face.

JR is a very handsome young man and has gone on to his new home where he has a 5 month ld TM puppy with which to play, a 15 year old Chow, to whom he shows utmost respect (smart boy!) and a couple of neighboring TMs that routinely visit for play times.

ARCHER

Archer was surrendered at a Los Angeles shelter by his owner, who told the shelter he was a Leonberger!!  I'd really like to catch that owner......

Archer is a coated Central Asian Ovcharka and a very handsome boy at that!  Archer arrived here on 01/28/07 and decided that he wanted to be boss male around here :-)  It was pretty funny watching him attempt to boss the other males around but jumping in shock when one of the females snarled back at him!

Archer has gone to his forever home and his new owner has been wonderful about sending pictures of them together!

There was apparently an instant bonding between them...  It's so awesome when that happens! And it's one of the great joys of rescue work.

XENA

Xena came from a less than ideal situation, but started to nicely adjust to all the changes in her life here, especially when she realized that play time was also for her! After shying away from all of us for a time, she discovered that treats could be easily had if she just stood still or gave us the "starved waif look".

She is a sweetheart of a girl who was justifiably wary of meeting new people, but had actually reached the point where she allowed us to comb her and even occasionally pat her pointy head :-)

She does enjoy being with other dogs, and has been adopted by a super family with another abused rescue who is trying to tell her that life can actually be good.

MISHKA

Mishka is one of our own puppies whose family was going through some rough times and brought him back here to us.  He had been around goats, but did not do well with the kids, when they started flying around the pasture :-)  He wanted to play with them and that can be very dangerous to the babies.  He is extremely protective of his family and required a very experienced owner.

He also has quite the sense of humor and gets along well with other spayed/neutered dogs.

And our big boy has gone to his new home! He will be guarding a business for his new owner and they seem to be getting along quite well for such short acquaintance :-)  But we miss him here, as AlmaBear and Boby have lost a favorite playmate!

YURI

Yuri is a Caucasian puppy who was found wandering around western New Jersey. The owner had not claimed him and he was only about 5 months old at the time.  Imagine our surprise when he proved to have a tattoo and it led back to one of the largest breeding kennels in Russia.

The shelter had already neutered him and brought him up to date on shots.  They were even willing to issue a health certificate so we could fly him out here. The friend who picked him up for me called and said "you're not getting him....he's staying with me".  And is he ever and loving every minute of it!

He's also growing into quite the handsome young man!

SAMSON

Samson (previously named Sparky) is a one year old Central Asian Ovcharka puppy whose owners had their leased house literally sold out from under them and had been unable to find another house in their area of California that will allow any dogs over 25 pounds....say what?

Because of this, they were forced to give up their sweetheart of a boy, who gets along well with other dogs (thank GOD!!!!!!) and is great around children, as he has been raised with a young boy.  He barely arrived here before the first of the applicants for his new home pulled up. He's been doing very well in his new home and learning to obey the Caucasian/ASD X bitch who enjoys bossing him around.

NIKKI

Nikki is Beau's sister from another breeding, so she was a year younger and a *little* rowdier :-)  Although she was willing to play with any of the dogs here, she and Beau had a special connection. She got along well with Kayla and that was fun to watch, because her exuberance would occasionally cause her to roll over the top of Kayla.  She would stop, check Kayla out, give her a lick, and off she'd go again.

She has gone to her forever home and has another dog to play and the family has children, so she is in in her version of absolute doggie heaven! :-)

THOR

Thor is a very handsome Tibetan Mastiff whose owner had no more time for him.  He arrived here with almost no idea of how to play and Kayla and the others were kept busy teaching him.  But once he had it figured out......whoa! :-)

He loves to swim and has gone to a home with another dog that presumably shares all of his interests, like swimming, sleeping, eating, swimming.....and during the sleeping part, spending most of it in silly positions on his back.

RICOLA

This is Ricola, a very pretty Sharplaninatz who was another of those dumped in a shelter in Oklahoma.  There's a good chance that she is Bastian's littermate and like him, was sold to a totally unsuitable home. However this breeder is, her track record is awful and she apparently won't take her dogs back: oh, surprise!  We've had three dogs end up in shelters in Oklahoma and Montana that all look distinctly alike....hmmm.

Ricola is a sweetheart of a girl and becomes protective very quickly once she feels at home.  She was approximately 18 months old when she went to live with her new owner, and appears to de doing very well there.  She does get along with other dogs as long as they don't challenge her and we're no longer worried about how she does with livestock.

KATY & JAKE

These two sweethearts were adopted by a family that totally loves them, but has just experienced some major health issues and therefore they need to be rehomed.  We would like to try to keep Jake & Katy together: they are a pair of super sweet and well behaved house dogs who are used to having and sharing their very own couch, are great with children and small dogs.

And they have found their forever home!  We are so pleased they were able to stay together.

ZANE

Zane is a Great Pyrenees/Newfoundland mix, who was dumped in a Las Vegas shelter along with another dog that was also absolutely terrified of everyone and everything and required some major "affection therapy" to get the two of them back to normal.

He'd been here for almost two years and we thought he would be staying forever. He had finally voluntarily come to us for attention and thoroughly enjoyed running around with several of the other dogs and that gave him sufficient confidence to join them in taking breaks from their exercise time to come to us for cuddling and combing. Yeeha! He's such a sweetheart of a boy and it was truly awesome to watch him coming out of that human-moron-induced shell.

And he has a wonderful new home with owners who have the extreme patience that he requires.

CZARITSA

This lovely young lady is a Gampr, imported from Armenia.  Her owner has had to move to an area where Czaritsa does not have enough room to run and stretch her legs and she needs more work to do.  She is very territorial and protective of her owner (in short, precisely what she was bred to be :-))

Czaritsa is in her new home and doing very well. She living on a goat ranch with lots of other livestock guardians and goats and a wonderful human family and is adjusting very well to this change of venue!

KIRA

This adorable 13 month old puppy was dumped in an eastern North Carolina shelter just before Christmas.  Presumably her owners had plans for the holidays that did not include her......

She is great with people, had been ignoring the other dogs (which may have been a fear reaction due to being in a strange place) and the shelter manager said she loved being groomed.

A truly wonderful couple heard about her plight and drove from New York state to pick her up.  Apparently it was a case of love at first sight and we wish this family all the best with their new puppy!

A huge thank you to Kathryn and the staff at the New Bern, NC shelter for being so willing to work with rescue in placing this girl.

OZZIE

Ozzie was found running loose here in southeastern Washington and his owner chose not to take him back home.  Poor Ozzie had a huge lump in his vertebra, which our vet advised us was due to the fact that he had no musculature and he was extremely malnourished.  So as per our vet's recommendation we gave him lots of healthy food and lots of exercise and did this boy ever build up muscles quickly!

He and Zane literally spent hours romping in the pasture and on the straw bales.

Ozzie has found a new home with a wonderful couple that have provided him with a playmate in the form of a 10 year old Rottweiler bitch and a three year old coonhound who was desperate for someone with whom to roughhouse and run!

LUKA

Luka is our very special girl who caught a ride on a livestock transport from a Connecticut shelter to a foster home in Nebraska, then came the rest of the way here with the relay of a rescue railroad run.  She traveled beautifully and was quite the ambassador for the breed, as she is so well mannered.

She is a 6 year old Caucasian, can get along with other dogs and loves being part of a family.  Her foster family in Nebraska not only offered to keep her there while we were trying to arrange transport, but then had to deal with Luka coming in with mange and then treating her and their own two dogs for this mange.  And they did so very successfully!  They also taught her some basic manners and she actually minds quite well at this time.

As beautifully behaved as she is in public, she is extremely territorial and will vigorously defend her property against all strangers, be they two- or four-legged.

And Luka has a new family!  This girl has now traveled all the way back east to live with her new family and several other dogs.

CU BEAR

Cu Bear is another Sharplaninatz and Bella and Angel's long-time buddy. He's about 5 1/2 years old and has lived with horses, goats and children. He was not in the field with the goats, but outside their fence. Upon arrival here, he didn't seem to be interested in having lamb for their dinner, so I suspect he might work out as indoor/outdoor guardians, which he has after all, had a lot of practice doing! Cu Bear is also a sweetheart of a boy, who loves to run and play. He's very energetic and does need a lot of room, but also loves to cuddle.

Cu has now been here for 7 months and given that he was home raised, he is not adjusting well to a kennel situation, regardless of how much time he spends out running the pasture and playing with Angel. And he now has a new home and family!  He's on a working farm and has several new canine buddies and a great new family to protect.

LIGHTFOOT (His new owners renamed him HOMES as in, I've had too many....:-))

.

This adorable four month old puppy was dumped in a California shelter.  We let him romp with our other dogs and let our number one nanny determine what other training he needed from her :-)) He was said to be food aggressive when he first came here: (that is, he growled when another dog approached his food while he was eating) and that may very well have had something to do with the fact that he was underweight.  He also has a horrible overbite and we wonder if that was part of the reason he was dumped......

He is an absolute sweetheart and everyone who met him during his transport could not understand why he was dumped.  And he's gone to his new home, where he has had the pleasure of meeting geese, chickens, a slew of other dogs, cats and whatever other critters his new owners will be acquiring, such as this kid who prefers hanging out with Homes to being with his mother.

BOBBY

Bobby was given to me by a friend who had imported what he thought was a pair of livestock guardians that he was wanting to breed to his own dogs and then found out that neither of them had ever been around sheep.

He thoroughly enjoyed  romping all over the fields and then taking these immense flying leaps onto a favorite crate or dog house. He's found a great home with a Caucasian bitch for a playmate.

BELA

Bela is an absolute sweetheart of a Sarplaninac that came into rescue from the midwest. She, Cu and Angel were raised with horses, goats, cats and children. Her coat was shaved before she arrived here and is growing back in very slowly, but right now she's actually blowing what little coat she has and as the temperatures are starting to drop into the 20's, I'm hoping that coat gets a move on and grows!

And Bela has gone to her new home! She now gets to watch over her new owner, a whole pack of Basset Hounds, a cat and goats. She has a large amount of acreage to cover but gets to sleep in the house at night and loves every minute of it!

ARGUS

Argus is an adorable 2 year male whose owner was forced to move from the country, where he had lots of room to run and only his owner to enjoy life with, to the city, where she's sharing a house with several other people. Argus needed room to roam and run and he gets along with other dogs and loves to play.

He is, however, an excellent watch dog. Even while romping and playing with the other dogs, he does not miss anything that's happening on the property and will break off from playing to go check it out. He's in his new home with a service dog and a search & rescue dog & having a blast!

BASTIAN

Bastian is a Sarplaninac found in an Oklahoma shelter and we do think he might just be related to Ricola.  There appears to be a breeder there who is pumping out puppies on a regular basis (why else would her website say "puppies available throughout the year"?)

Bastian immediately stole hearts and went off to his new home without ever making the trip up here to visit us.

MIKA

Mika's owner moved from New York state to Florida and decided to leave her behind.  Mika was shocked to be invited inside her foster home, but enjoyed every minute of it and could easily have become another of the couch potato types.  She is housebroken and is very insistent about being let outside when necessary.  She loves people, gets along with other dogs and will do anything to please, if that brings her some attention.  She is another of the puppy mill dogs and we have found a home for her!

She's in a home with a 7 month old Pomeranian puppy who just wants to play. If she doesn't accidentally squash the poor thing while playing, this could be a match made in heaven!

DAKOTA

Dakota landed in a northern California shelter at only 6 months old and was rescued from there by a family who were told he was a severely abused Saint Bernard/Great Dane mix, due to the cropped ears and docked tail.  They were pretty amazed to find they had adopted Central Asian!  Dakota has had some aggression issues, especially with other dogs and in confined areas, such as a vehicle or in his home.  His family had an older dog when they adopted him and things went fine for a while until Dakota decided he really would prefer to be an only dog.  He's in his new home and doing very well, especially after having hitched a ride on a tractor-trailer rig clear across the country to his new home in North Carolina!

KANGAL PUPPIES

We had the absolute pleasure of being able to assist a young couple in the placement of several of the thirteen puppies from their litter.  They had imported a Kangal bitch from Armenia and bred her to a male here in Washington state and then about suffered a coronary at the number of puppies she whelped! She is an excellent livestock guardian, but they found themselves needing more of the same, as they were having a tremendous coyote problem.  The puppies were a total joy to have here and have now all gone to super homes.

WILSON

Wilson was a sweetheart of a Great Pyrenees who didn't like being left alone.  His owner worked and Wilson felt going "walkabout" was a great way to relieve the tedium of his days.  Unfortunately animal control did not feel the same way about this and after the third time they picked him up told his owner this could not continue.  Wilson has a family now with children, is tremendously spoiled and loving every minute of it!

SIKSA

Siksa is a lovely young  3 year old bitch who came into rescue because she had a tendency to want to jump fences to visit the neighbor's dog to play.  This was a bit scary, as the neighbors didn't realize that all that fierce noise was nothing more than play sounds and these dogs do truly play hard.  If you've never heard them before, it can sound like a war zone.  But if you stand and watch them, you can see the breaks they take while standing side by side looking ferocious and studiously not looking each other in the eye.  Then when they've had enough, they'll more than likely collapse side by side and get some much deserved sleep.

Siksa was raised with children and another dog and during all the public trips I took with her once she arrived, she was an absolute lady.  What a sweetheart of a girl!  And she's in her new home with a Siberian mix as a playmate and 3 Jack Russell Terriers to keep her humble. She's so comfortable that she and Chernobyl, her Sibe X buddy, will actually share a bone.....wow!

NATASHA

Tasha is one of my own puppies and I made the first time breeder error of letting her go before 10 or 12 weeks of age and letting her go to a multi-dog household.  She is a very dominant bitch when around other dogs, except her dam & sire.  She's lovely with people and very well behaved out in public, but had to go to a home with no other dogs.

She is now living a life of luxury with her new owner: whether he actually appreciates the fact that she likes to sleep on his leather couch is something he's not saying :-)  Tasha now has a buddy to play with. He's a German Shepherd that apparently accepted her advising him that SHE is the alpha bitch and if he wanted to hang around, he needed to understand that........

BUDDY

Buddy is now 5 years old and is still being taught some manners, as well as getting adjusted to several children.  He still has food aggression issues.  His foster says he is the most affectionate dog imaginable when there's no food or "property" around.  But if someone is fixing something as simple as a sandwich, Buddy thinks it's his and will try to go after it.  He also does not get along with the foster owner's bitch, so would have to go to an only dog home.  At this point in time, Buddy may in fact be in his permanent home, as the foster has, to date, wanted to keep him there.  The family is still dealing with Buddy's "issues" and though he has shown some improvement, he can still be difficult to live with :-)

VINCENZO

Vincenzo was turned in to a shelter in Florida, as his owners were on their way out of town:  they claimed he was "unadoptable".  Of course, so would any dog appear who had spent his life tied to a tree in the Florida heat!

He was in a foster home, is still very much feeling his oats, but has responded to a name change as a result of a joke(!)  He become more the gentleman with his foster Mom (ever since she threatened to rip his ears off and beat him with them), but still is way too aggressive around strangers.  He found his new home with his foster Mom's son and from all accounts is having the time of his life actually being part of a real family.

BEAR

And another one from the Southern California area! This boy may well be Bruce's littermate. We'll find out just as soon as he arrives here and we have the opportunity to check to check out his attitude! He's been in a "sanctuary", that is actually more of a hoarder heaven. The woman was collecting dogs until she hit a count of about 200 and then realized she couldn't take care of them all......duh! He's been renamed Bear and placed in a home with several other dogs and lots of sheep. He's having a great time warning strangers away from "his" flock and is doing really well with the other dogs.

SAM

Sam the "wonder dog" was found locally.  He had been dumped at the shelter as a puppy and then adopted by a gal who felt sorry for him, given that he was extremely emaciated and not looking well.  She was able to keep him long enough to get his health and his weight back and then passed him on to us.  Sam was awesome with sheep, goats, chickens, horses and other dogs.  We never managed to find anything he couldn't accomplish.  He lives happily with his owner on a hobby farm where he gets to deal with all the critters and spend time in the house when they're in the barn.

MISSY

That Missy ended up in foster care is primarily due to the dedication and concern shown by the staff of the Humane Society of Central Delaware County.  Deb and her staff were tireless in their attempts to find her a home or at least get her into a rescue foster home.  Thanks ever much to all of you!   Missy's been adopted by her foster family!  The children became so attached to her that they became upset any time someone called wanting to adopt her.  She's in her forever home and loving every minute of it.

KENO

Keno came from the Pahrump, NV shelter, where he had been in protective custody along with several other dogs for over a year. He appears to be a CMD/Australian Shepherd cross, with blue eyes so light they appear almost white and the snowshoe feet of the CMD. He's a sweetheart of a boy and he and Bruce got along right from the beginning. They were together in their home with several other dogs, and having a wonderful time until their owners went through a divorce. Keno is now with a wonderful couple who allow him to sleep on the bed and generally spoil him and new sidekick terribly. :-))

BRUCE

Bruce is a six year old, 130 pound sweetheart of a dog, who had been neglected but not abused.  He loves people, especially men who are willing to play with him (and he does love to play!) and enjoys every scrap of attention he can convince anyone to give him.  He was an owner give up in the Los Angeles area and on his way north, wormed his way into the hearts of all his transporters.  He's great with other dogs, does not have an aggressive or dominant bone in his body, and if another dog lets him know he wants to be boss, Bruce's response is "great, you be the alpha, now let's play!" Bruce has a forever home with one of his owners.

EIKON CGC

Eikon has blossomed in his forever home: it is the perfect place for him! He gets to be the alpha dog and his four-legged playmates like to help him chase chipmunks that have the nerve to be found on their property!  He settled right in the moment he arrived there and is having a marvelous time with his new family, as they are with him. Eikon's former owners felt he was not sufficiently protective of their home and acreage, but his new owners say he immediately determined which part of their neighborhood was his to protect and can be very vociferous in announcing that fact. Eikon recently obtained his Canine Good Citizen Certificate: Congratulations to the boy who's met and even exceeded his owners' hopes for a rescue dog!

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
