We are very fortunate to be
working with Northern Lights Molosser Rescue, as Tara has been taking in and
fostering the South Russian Ovcharkas that are crawling out of the woodwork in
Texas.
She is also fostering 5
of the Caucasian Ovcharka puppies listed below. Given their medical
conditions and total lack of socialization or training, these puppies will be
quite the handful for a while.
For information regarding
these dogs as well as the other molosser breeds Tara rescues, she can be
contacted at NLMolosserRescue@aol.com
We have just gotten 9 eight
month old Caucasian Ovcharka puppies into rescue, along with their approximately
4 year old mother. Also 2 HUGE "Great Pyrenees" that I would swear have
some Great Dane in their woodpile, but I have it on good authority that there is
a delightful (NOT!!!) puppy mill in the mid-west that breeds these huge,
dysplastic, slobbery dogs and calls them Great Pyrenees...
They will all require evaluation, veterinary care
and spaying/neutering before they are available for adoption. Most of them
currently have a case of demodectic mange, which (Thank God!) is the
non-contagious one, but requires more vetting to get rid of. So there will
be no photos of this crew until they look more socially acceptable :-)
MAXIM
 |
Maxim is a relatively small
and very undernourished Caucasian who was found as a stray in southern New
Jersey. He
was about 25 inches at the shoulder and
weighed perhaps 65-70lbs at the time. .
He
is now doing well with the Chihuahua fosters, but his foster home would not trust him alone with
them. He has improved, the cats have gone from food to fascination, but
again, he should NOT be trusted alone with them. He is fine with other
non-dominate male dogs as long as he is introduced properly, and with an
owner that is a strong leader, he'd even be fine with dominate males (he and
a CAO owned by the foster are doing
well with supervision.)
He has some food aggression problems with other
animals, none with people, but based on his history I feel that will
subside. He really wants to please, and will make someone a GREAT
companion. He is so grateful for a pet and a kind word. His
foster mom has him
switched to raw, with high doses of probiotics, flax, salmon oil, vit C, and
kelp, and he is doing well and putting on weight. |

LOLA
|
Lola was 1 year old in
August. She is an exuberant and happy girl but don't be fooled there is a
serious livestock guarding dog lurking in there. She gets along well with
most dogs and she loves people. Her biggest problem is that she loves to
object and resource guard, and no one has really tried to curb this behavior
before she arrived at her foster mom's. Also if she misreads signals from
another dog, she can be a very formidable aggressor. She would do best as an
only dog or with one other dog, preferably male. She is not good with
poultry or cats.
She is being fostered
on the east cost and I will hopefully have a link to her profile on
Dogster shortly.

ZORKA

|
In her
owner's words: Zorka is a 2 ¾ year old
purebred Central Asian Ovcharka. She is looking for a new home since her
current owner’s living situation will be changing. She is 95lbs,
housebroken, crate trained, spayed, fully vaccinated, well socialized, and
responsive to basic obedience commands.
Zorka is typical for her breed: alert, athletic,
intelligent, relatively calm, sensitive, and extremely sweet with her
family and familiar people. She seeks attention and is quite affectionate,
but can be cautious around strangers and protective on her property.
Zorka seems fine with children and enjoys being pet by them when out for
walks but will be placed into a home without children as she is not
accustomed to living with them. A securely fenced yard is ideal as she
enjoys spending time outdoors.
A home without other dogs is preferred, although Zorka
currently lives with two dogs and may do well with a submissive male who
does not try to challenge her as she is not always willing to share her
belongings. She is fine with cats. Zorka would do best in a family with
experience owning a large dog and she is not for the first time dog
owner. Private adoption. Current owner is looking to re-home her nearby,
preferably within a 1-2 hour maximum driving distance, and is willing to
spend the necessary time to make the transition into the new home a smooth
one. She is currently located in New Jersey.
Adoption will involve a contract which states that
the dog must be returned to original owner if the new situation does not
work out. This big girl is truly a sweetheart and will be a wonderful
companion in the right family. |

KAYLA
|
Kayla was my "den
Mother" of the rescues. She had to teach Kody and JR to play,
and had to put several dogs in their place when they overstepped their
boundaries.
She has an outrageous
coat and does not like the heat but prefers the comfort of an air
conditioner to the wading pools :-) She hopped into the pools but
only as a preface to flopping back down under the vent.
She needs an
experienced home, as she is a typical TM, and with the right combination
of owner and perhaps a playmate, she will truly blossom. She does
not do well with a dog that wants to challenge her but she loves to play
with dogs who acknowledge her alpha status. |

SIMBA
 |
In his owner's own words: Simba
is a 21 month old Central Asian Ovcharka whose owner has had to
relocate due to work and that also leaves him much less time for
Simba. He would like Simba to find a home where the family
has more time to spend with him.
Simba gets along
with both males and females. He grew up with his owner's roommates'
Great Dane male and Newfoundland female. And his other friends
used to bring their dogs and he played with all of them.
He hasn't been around
many children, except his owner's friends' 2-3 year olds and
other kids who would play with him when they were around. Simba
is with his owner in New Jersey and would love to meet a new
family! |

 |
And here I would
like to interject a tale of a dog NOT available for adoption. We were
notified of an 11 month old Caucasian bitch in a southern California shelter.
The wonderful people who usually pull these shelter dogs for us categorically
refused to pull this particular one due to aggression issues.......this had us
puzzled, so we contacted animal control for that area. Apparently the
owners had originally called animal control and told them they had a stray dog
in their yard. By the time the animal control officers arrived
there, they had decided to be honest and admit this was their own dog, but so
aggressive that they were completely unable to control her. And apparently
her aggression is unpredictable and none of the very patient shelter people have
been able to deal with her. This is truly a sad situation and could be
indicative of either a breeder who did not bother to screen new homes or an
import whose new family thought they could handle this breed. In any case,
it is the poor dog who must pay the ultimate price.
DUKE
In his owner's own words:
Duke was born June 4th 2003 in Brooklyn, NY and he comes
from a backyard breeder. He was rescued by us in September 2003 from a
foster home in Brooklyn as a 4 month old puppy.
He currently weighs
100-110 pounds, is neutered and up to date with all shots. His rabies
vaccination expires in February 2010. He has all medical records.
Duke is very well
socialized, good with people (after a proper introduction) and with
non-dominant and submissive dogs. He has all the typical
characteristics
for Ovcharkas : smart,
stubborn, protective, calm and alert. We traveled with him everywhere so
he was exposed to a different environment, different people and animals.
He is a typical livestock guard dog and the perfect environment for
him would be a large farm
where he could be outside 24/7 and guard the property. He cannot be
chained or locked in a small area. We could not train him to use a
crate. He is very well leash trained and walks calmly next to the owner.
The reason for this
rescue is that we have another 100lbs male dog (mix of Doberman,
Rottweiler and maybe GS) name Brutus. Brutus is a real sweetheart and a
typical house pet. Duke (CAO) provokes fights from time to time and every
6 months they have a really nasty fight. But the main reason why we need
to give up Duke is that we have 14 months old baby boy that we are afraid
of that one day we will get in the middle of two fighting dogs. I do not
want to take another chance. Also I do not want Brutus to get hurt
again. We love Duke very much and want the best for him. We have to make
sure that we will end up in good hands with someone understanding
characteristics of this breed.
|

His owners
do not wish to put Duke on a plane to go to a new home, so we're
hoping we can find a new home for him somewhere on the east
coast (he is currently in New Jersey) or we need someone who
wants to take a long drive :-))

BOBY
MIKKO
- who is now heartworm clear.....yeeha!!!
 |
Mikko turned three years old
last August and this very nice Caucasian has spent entirely too much time
tied out behind his owner's house. Amazingly enough, this has not made him
stupidly aggressive, but he REALLY enjoyed being able to come into our house
and relax :-)
We received the test
results regarding heartworm and thyroid as he is somewhat overweight:
he has turned out to be fine as far as his thyroid is concerned,
but he is heartworm positive, so he will be undergoing that
rather expensive and extensive treatment.
He gets along with other
dogs, with cats and is good with people, but is also protective of his
family. He has never been around children, so needs a home with adults only. |
 |
 |
ALMABEAR
| AlmaBear is a
4 year
Caucasian/Central Asian mix who is in need of a new home. She does
very well with her family, including children, but is very territorial and
standoffish with strangers.
She originally shared her
play time with Mishka, Archer and Mikko and is now romping with a couple of
Tibetan Mastiffs!
She can apparently be aggressive toward other dogs, but has been anything
but since arriving here. Although in the photo below right JR, who is a 2
year old TM puppy was continuously trying to express his affection for her,
to the point she was ready to
kill him :-)
This very pretty girl needs a home with an experienced
owner and a firm hand and one who will treasure her protective
instincts, her superb sense of humor and her cuddliness with her family. |
 |
Cheyenne
 |
Cheyenne
is a 3 1/2 year old Caucasian/Central Asian mix that has been
with one owner since she was a puppy. She weighs approximately
80-85 pounds
She likes to go
for long walks and likes having her belly scratched. She can be
dominant with other dogs and ideally needs a home with no other dogs.
Although she was raised with three other dogs, she seems to be taking
some exception to them at this point. :-)
She needs an owner
who can be firm and train her properly and who will enjoy the outdoors
as much as she does. |
